With the election just under a week away, I have thought hard about who I want to see run my country. I might not agree with everything that one candidate says or does all time but we are human and being human means we make mistakes. I figure I have only two options when it comes to choosing the next President of the United States. I can choose Obama or McCain. I have watched the debates and as I have watched Obama I must confess that he is a great rhetorician. I did a term paper on great rhetoricians in college among them were Martin Luther King, Jr. and Adolf Hitler. I listened to their speeches and they were eloquent. They made you see the change they could bring or offer. It's no wonder why the people of Germany who in desperate times wanted some change as they were starving and their economy was at rock bottom. Martin Luther had a dream and it made the country perhaps look beyond the color of one's skin and take the necessary steps for the rights of blacks to come to the forefront. Yet, as I listen to Obama, my stomach lurches as I know a little bit of his background--I have tried to do my part to see what type of man he his. Yet, with all the hype about him and his charasmatic personality can't people see what lies beneath his words. He's a snake charmer. He lulls you away with his words and his smile but what happens when he is in control. What friends will he keep and what laws will he pass?
As a mother of 4, I have learned responsibility to those who can't take care of themselves, the little one who is sick and only wants to be held and loved, those that smile for the first time and those whose little fingers wrap around yours. There is nothing better than holding a newborn in your arms and feeling your heart grow and knowing that you brought this miracle into this world. Yet, how can Obama with daughters of his own support partial birth abortions when the baby at a viable age is extracted from the mother except for the head and then scissors are rammed through the skull and the babies brains are suctioned out. This is not humane. I have friends who would give anything to have a baby of their own but are not able to and yet this practice of killing little ones who could live on their own takes place and Obama supports it. Don't give me your hoopla saying that he voted "present"--he didn't take a stand and not taking a stand is just as bad. I worry about policies he'll make and how he'll treat others. I know how he talks but I need someone who does more than talk the talk.
I know that McCain has his share of problems and concerns, but at least he sticks his neck out and stands up for what he believes. I need someone who will do that. I know that our economy isn't the best but look at the world's economy because it's not doing, too, well either. I know that we will emerge from this time stronger but I want someone that has similar values leading me. Don't you?

I'm not a particularly political person and I usually find all of this to be boring and, well, political. This year the stakes are high and I feel like my vote actually matters because the race seems so close. With all that in mind I've been trying to really decipher who would be the better president. I don't understand much about gun policies or foreign policies so eventually it came down to who I thought the better man was. I listened intently to the debates and truly liked Obama better. His presentation was cleaner, crisper, made more sense, was typically without large amounts of bullying and name-calling, all of which I found to be particularly annoying about McCain. Ultimately though, I had to look at the issues that I know where I stand and that's the moral issues. Truth be told, I don't really like McCain, but out of the two candidates, whether he believes in it truly or not, McCain stands on the right side of the line when it comes to things like abortion. And this feeling has been cemented even more as I read about Sarah Palin's bold statements that outweigh McCain's on the issue of preserving marriage and the lives of children. I guess what I'm saying Tress, is that I totally agree with you. It feels cliche to say but thanks for standing up for what you believe in!

I must admit, you have me completely blown away with this one. I cannot believe that you would use MLK and Hitler in the same sentence. To compare a peaceful, intelligent and pioneer as MLK makes me ill. He stood for everyone who was treated differently based upon race, religion and creed. Not just African Americans. He was assinated by a high school dropout and career criminal. He was such a leader of civil rights (not black rights) that we now have a day during the year in order to just remember him and his efforts. I hope you take this day seriously as his efforts make it possible for you to practice your religion without persecution.
Hitler, ummmm. Where do I start? He was a decorated war veteran just like Mccain. Unlike Mccain though, he gave us the term "Genocide" by killing 6,000,000 people of the Jewish faith. These were men, women, children and infants. He also had people with special needs executed in his pursuit to creating the "master" race. I would argue that he was NOT a great "Rhetorican". He actually was well on his way to accomplishing what his goal was. So he did not misrepresent himself whatsoever.
Please tell me how MLK and Hitler are even remotely the same?

What is more amazing is that you say you have "tried" to do your research on Obama, but it seems you fell short. But for some reason your "stomach lurched" and assessed that he is a "snake charmer". If people really want children of their own, let them know about Adoption. There are alot of children that need loving homes. Ask those people if they can put their own agenda aside and truely help someone in need.
Ignorance is no excuse. If you honestly believe that being a African American in america is easy you have a long way to go. People have been killed just for being African American. Its hard enough to go to Harvard and being a senator in the United States as a white male. Imagine doing that when your African American? Does that not ring any bells for you? Do you honestly think that everyone from day one is playing with the same deck of cards?
Single issue voters is what this country should really concern itself with.
